Beretta Godoy participated in a HKIAC seminar on trade relations between Asia and Latin America
The seminar “Business Relations between Asia and Latin America: Risk Understanding and Conflict Resolution with Asian parties” was held in Santiago de Chile on June 19. The event was organized by the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), the Santiago Chamber of Commerce and its Arbitration and Mediation Center, with the institutional support of the Chilean-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism.
The seminar aimed at analyzing types of risks and resolution of conflicts between Latin American and Asian parties because both regions are increasingly developing commercial relations in the last decade.
Federico Godoy, partner of Beretta Godoy, was one of the international experts invited to the seminar. Phil Smith, from Beretta Godoy’s Asia Pacific Desk, represented the firm in the round table “Maximizing possibilities of recovery and compliance of arbitral awards in Asia”. He shared the round table with Cristian Conejero, partner of Philippi, Yrrarázaval, Pulido & Brunner (Chile); Angelynn Meya, associate, Foley Hoag (France); y Joseph Tirado, partner, Winston & Strawn (United Kingdom).
In his speech, Smith noted that the implementation and recognition of a foreign arbitral award has a two-year limited period and may be denied for “violation of social and public interest.” He also provided details on the reporting system, a type of automatic appeal that operates regarding awards in China.
